Round-Robin Fixture Generator: Mathematics & Scheduling Algorithms
Master round-robin football scheduling. Learn the Berger table algorithm, the circle rotation method, match count formulas, and how to handle odd team byes.
Competition rules and local costs vary by country. References to the FA and County FAs describe English practice; check your local governing body before applying them elsewhere. Footy League subscriptions are billed in GBP.
Round-robin schedules every team against every opponent. For N teams, single round-robin needs N × (N - 1) / 2 matches; double needs N × (N - 1). Footy League generates pairings and dates, skipping selected matchweeks or holiday periods while retaining all rounds. Review home/away sequences and assign venues before publishing.
1. Mathematical Foundations of Round-Robin Schedules
In round-robin, every team meets every opponent. Each pair plays once in a single round-robin, or twice in a double.
For N teams, each plays N - 1 matches per leg. Calculate playing rounds separately from holiday breaks.
| Teams (N) | Matches per Round | Single Rounds | Single Total Matches | Double Total Matches (H&A) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 2 | 3 | 6 | 12 |
| 6 | 3 | 5 | 15 | 30 |
| 8 | 4 | 7 | 28 | 56 |
| 10 | 5 | 9 | 45 | 90 |
| 12 | 6 | 11 | 66 | 132 |
| 14 | 7 | 13 | 91 | 182 |
| 16 | 8 | 15 | 120 | 240 |
2. The Polygon / Circle Rotation Algorithm (Berger System)
The circle method, also called the polygon or Berger system, creates pairings without duplication.
Fix one team, arrange the others in a circle and pair opposite positions. Keep the fixed team in place and rotate the others one position each round.
Worked Example: 6-Team Division (5 Rounds)
Fix Team 1 at top-left. Rotate teams 2 through 6 clockwise around it.
- •Round 1: 1–6, 2–5, 3–4.
- •Round 2: 1–5, 6–4, 2–3.
- •Round 3: 1–4, 5–3, 6–2.
- •Round 4: 1–3, 4–2, 5–6.
- •Round 5: 1–2, 3–6, 4–5.
3. Balancing Home and Away Allocations
Pairing opponents does not allocate pitches. With an even team count, each plays an odd number of matches per leg, so an exact home/away split is impossible.
The circle method does not guarantee strict home/away alternation. Review sequences and resolve groundshare and pitch-allocation constraints yourself.
Double round-robin reverses home/away assignments in the return leg. Every team hosts each opponent once.
4. Solving Odd Team Numbers with "Dummy" Byes
An odd team count leaves one team without an opponent each round.
Add a dummy team representing a bye. With seven teams, generate eight positions; whoever faces the dummy rests that round.
Seven teams need seven single round-robin rounds. Each team plays six matches and has one bye.
5. Manual Spreadsheets vs Automated Fixture Engines
Spreadsheets can suit small competitions. Multiple divisions, shared pitches and unavailable dates need more planning.
Footy League generates pairings, dates and byes. Organisers assign venues and manage later changes.
6. Leave Matchweeks and Holiday Periods Free
Free, Pro and Elite support excluded matchweeks and inclusive holiday periods. Every round remains, with later fixtures moving forward at the configured interval. Check the preview’s revised finish date.
Choose local holiday dates yourself. Exclusions apply only to that generation, not existing fixtures, cup draws or festival schedules. The practical guide below includes instructions and a worked example.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a round-robin fixture generator skip school holidays?
Yes. On every plan, select matchweek dates or inclusive holiday periods. Every round remains, at the configured interval. Choose your own dates and check the preview’s finish date.
How many games are in a round-robin tournament?
Single round-robin needs N × (N - 1) / 2 matches. Eight teams play 28 matches; double round-robin doubles that to 56.
How many rounds are needed for 10 teams in a football league?
Ten teams need nine single round-robin rounds, or 18 double. Holidays add calendar weeks, not playing rounds.
What is a bye in football scheduling?
With an odd team count, one team rests each round. This is a bye; it differs from a league-wide holiday break.
How do you turn a single round-robin into a double round-robin?
Repeat the pairings with home and away reversed, so each team hosts every opponent once.
