How to Create Football Fixtures: Step-by-Step Scheduling Guide
Create football fixtures with round-robin scheduling. Learn how to exclude matchweeks, half-term and holiday breaks, check venues and review your season dates.
Competition rules and local costs vary by country. References to the FA and County FAs describe English practice; check your local governing body before applying them elsewhere. Footy League subscriptions are billed in GBP.
To create football fixtures, choose single or double round-robin, set your first matchday and interval, and exclude school holidays, half-term breaks or other unavailable dates. In Footy League, select individual matchweeks or inclusive date ranges before generating. Every round is retained, with later fixtures moving forward at the configured interval. Check the revised finish date, then review venues and kick-off times before publishing.
1. Calculate Rounds and Match Totals
Start with the division’s team count. It determines the fixtures and playing rounds required.
For N teams, single round-robin requires N × (N - 1) / 2 fixtures. Double round-robin requires N × (N - 1).
Fixture Volume Formula (Single vs Double Round-Robin)
Where N = number of teams in the division. If N is odd, one team receives a bye in each round.
- •8 Teams Single Round: 8 × 7 / 2 = 28 matches across 7 rounds.
- •8 Teams Double Round (Home & Away): 8 × 7 = 56 matches across 14 rounds.
- •10 Teams Double Round: 10 × 9 = 90 matches across 18 rounds.
- •12 Teams Double Round: 12 × 11 = 132 matches across 22 rounds.
2. Balance Home and Away Sequences
Review home and away runs for fairness, travel and pitch availability.
The circle method does not guarantee strict weekly home/away alternation. Double round-robin reverses each pairing in the return leg so both teams host once.
3. Manage Venue Constraints & Groundsharing
Clubs sharing a pitch must check home dates and available kick-off slots.
Footy League leaves generated venues blank. Organisers assign pitches and resolve groundshare constraints before publishing.
Allow enough time for the full match, changeover and warm-ups when scheduling successive games on one pitch.
4. Build In Postponement Buffer Weeks
Leave spare dates for weather postponements and cup ties, based on local conditions.
Check bank holidays and venue closures before committing to a finish date. Reserved dates provide room for rearrangements; those fixtures still need to be scheduled by the organiser.
Fixture Secretary Planning Checklist
- Verify pitch availability dates with council / leisure provider before publishing dates.
- Identify groundsharing clubs and pair them with reciprocal home/away calendars.
- Schedule divisional cup preliminary and knockout rounds into master dates.
- Reserve at least two buffer weekends before Christmas and two after mid-February.
- Establish a transparent cutoff time for weather inspection call-offs (e.g. 8:30 AM Sunday).
5. How to exclude matchweeks and holiday breaks
Skip individual matchweek dates or longer holiday periods. Confirm dates with local schools and venues: Footy League does not automatically identify school holidays.
Available on Free, Pro and Elite with at least four division teams. Exclusions affect league round-robin fixtures, not the separate cup draw or festival schedule generators.
Set up your fixture exclusions
- Open Admin → Fixtures & Schedule → Generate round-robin fixtures.
- Choose the season, division, legs, first matchweek, interval and kick-off.
- Select Add excluded matchweek and choose each matchday date to skip.
- Select Add excluded period for longer breaks. Enter From and To dates. Both endpoints are included.
- Review the preview’s finish date. Every round and the configured interval are retained.
- Select Generate fixtures, review and confirm. Assign venues and check kick-off times before sharing.
| Matchday date | Calendar decision |
|---|---|
| 17 October 2026 | Play round 1 |
| 24 October 2026 | Skip: individual excluded matchweek |
| 31 October 2026 | Skip: within the excluded period 31 October–6 November 2026 |
| 7 November 2026 | Play round 2 |
| 14 November 2026 | Play round 3 |
Breaks are not saved as season-wide restrictions. Replace generated fixtures requires an unplayed, still-scheduled generated calendar, with no manual or imported league fixtures existing in that division and season.
6. Handling Byes with Odd Team Numbers
With an odd team count, one team has a bye each round. N teams need N rounds for single round-robin, or 2 × N for double.
Check each team’s rest dates alongside holiday breaks before publishing.
Generate Football Fixtures Around Your Holiday Breaks
Generate single or double round-robin fixtures, skip holiday breaks and review the finish date on any plan. Assign venues before publishing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I exclude individual matchweeks or a whole holiday period?
Yes. Combine Add excluded matchweek for individual dates with Add excluded period for longer breaks.
Are the start and end dates of an excluded period included?
Yes. Scheduled matchdays on either the From or To date, or between them, are skipped.
Does excluding a matchweek remove a round or change the finish date?
Every round is retained at the configured interval. Skipping a scheduled matchday moves later fixtures forward. Review the revised finish date in the preview.
Are holiday exclusions available on the Free plan?
Yes. Free, Pro and Elite include exclusions within their league limits. Round-robin generation requires at least four division teams.
Can I add holiday breaks to fixtures I have already generated?
Use Replace generated fixtures for unplayed, still-scheduled generated matches. Results or manual/imported league fixtures block replacement. Exclusions do not automatically reschedule an existing calendar.
Are exclusions saved for every division, cup and festival in the season?
No. Enter exclusions for each round-robin generation. They are not season-wide restrictions and do not apply to cup draws or festival schedules.
How many weeks does a 10-team football league take?
A 10-team double round-robin needs 18 playing rounds. Holidays, cup dates and postponement buffers extend the calendar.
What is a Berger table in football scheduling?
A Berger table uses cyclical rotations to schedule each pairing once per leg. Home and away sequences still need review.
How do you handle pitch sharing between two teams?
Check home dates, assign venues and stagger kick-offs where needed. Groundshare planning remains the organiser’s responsibility.
What should a league do when a team drops out mid-season?
Under the FA Standard Code of Rules (SCOR Rule 22(D)), if a team withdraws before completing 75% of their scheduled fixtures, their playing record is expunged from the table. If they withdraw after completing 75% or more, past results generally stand and remaining fixtures are decided by the Management Committee (often awarded as walkovers to opponents).
